Seriously. I am always baffled at why certain people feel the need to make sure that folks who consciously live an unhealthy lifestyle live longer.

It's a matter of choice.
I am FOR the ability to choose what I eat, who I have sex with, what I drink, what I smoke or don't, what pills I take.

Thus I must be against any mayor, governor, congress, court, or president trying to force these decisions on me.

When I HURT someone ELSE, then and only then would I countenance governmemt action.

Right, government paternalism is a bad idea even when they actually are acting in our best interests.

Or they THINK they are acting in our best interests...a subtle difference.

Mathjak, I did not expect you to make such a statement. I am disappointed, Moderator cut: Calling out another member. Instead of being "relieved" that alcohol (for example) makes millions of people sick and kills them, we should be disgusted at this fact and addressing it. Maybe we should encourage more people to drive 100 mph in school zones...we will be "relieved" of all those future expenses!

Kefir I am all about freedom and choices, but we live in a society where bad choices do impact you directly and indirectly, and have a cost on our society. When someone "chooses" to drink and drive, and kills you or a loved one, that is an example of choices others make that impact you and our society as a whole.

The issue today is that we have people "freely choosing" (and I use that in quotes because we are actually trained with billions of dollars in marketing since the age of 1 to make certain choices, but I digress) to eat themselves sick, with no repercussions for those actions. The soda companies (for example) are making people sick with their products, and then passing off 100% of the cost to you and me. And anyone questioning this ridiculous scenario, or taking some action to correct it, is the problem?

So yes, we should be free to make choices, and nobody is preventing you from buying 100 ounces of soda in one sitting...you just have to make a couple extra trips to the counter. Which is no different than the current system...you want 42 ounces of soda? You buy a 32 ounce and then buy another soda! Crazy concept ay?

Some people in this country are disgustingly selfish.
I don't drink soda but I hope that when MathJack is sick and needing medical care for whatever reason, he remembers this and follows through with his thinking and spare us the (direct or indirect) costs.

Freedom, it's all about YOUR CHOICE to choose. Blood has been shed, lives lost for the price of FREEDOM. If someone chooses to live a lifestyle that isn't healthy, whether it eating, physical or mental, it is THEIR choice. I have found in my later year many people who lack common manners, are rude and insist on trying to change others rather than minding their own business. Butinkies need to butt out and let people live their lives as THEY see fit.

If someone is obese, it is THEIR choice. They KNOW they are obese, they don't need someone to point it out.

Ellwood I agree...but what they fought for was not for you to be free to make choices that impact MY freedom to not pay for your choices! Get it! And that's what's happening today.

So which freedom is more important: Your freedom to make yourself as sick as you want OR my freedom to not pay for your lousy decisions? As it stands now, you want the freedom to make lousy choices and force me (no freedom!) to pay for it..so which is it gonna be?
