I'm on the fence about it. What if 9/11 could have been prevented through programs like this? Of course, I'd like my privacy, but I don't want friends and family to be victims of an attack that could have been stopped.

I'm not sure whether I am off the mark here to mention your fifth amendment rights? With regards to not actually saying anything in case of incrimination, how does that apply when your not aware you are being watched?

With better "information" whatever the means acquired, can come better preparation or response to such tactics.

Though no means of information gathering is 100% perfect, nor is information always accurate.

To me it is all akin to the the TSA- and in fact I'd risk my friends and family's safety over losing personal freedoms and liberties on a daily basis. That said, it's a risk that something bad could happen, but it's a far greater guarantee that our privacy is being invaded upon.

Yes, it justifies spying if it saves lives. Don't want to get in trouble? Then avoid breaking the law. If you're doing everything right, you have nothing to worry about.

I avoid breaking the law, and still feel entitled to not having my e-mails, text messages, and phone logs read by the government- or even worse, those spying on our government.

Also, as I said earlier, spying 100% of the time does not equate to saving lives 100% of the time.
I can't put a value on a human life, but surely we have to accept some casualties in lieu of a police state.
