Thanks everyone for the responses. I move next week!
One more question. How's the walk to-and-from CU? Is the area around the Cathedral Parkway roundabout safe to walk around at night? I know it's near Morningside Park which I've heard a lot about.

It's an easy walk, you don't have to walk on the park side of the street. Just use caution. Also, on amsterdam ave, right where CU is, there's the M11 bus, it will take you directly to 107th and columbus.
Just for those times when you might feel it not safe to walk, or if it's cold.

Yes - walked it many, many times and I still do.
I would avoid the park (inside) after dark - but I have myself walked through it at night.
Morningside Park has completely changed in the last ten years. When I was an undergraduate, they warned us on the first day of orientation not to walk in the park and to walk on Morningside Drive, park side, with utmost caution. This just does not apply now to the same extent.
Manhattan Valley is part of the UWS. Like Hamilton Heights is part of Harlem. Harlem starts at 110th. East Harlem starts at 96th.
Technically, given the traditional, broad demarcations - yes.
But not really. I gained an awareness of this from community meetings, listening to residents of that area. They see themselves as distinct from Columbia, UWS, and so on. I felt that I should respect that. They did not want to be subsumed.
There is also the marketing aspect, which is certainly a factor now, better to stress "UWS" than "Manhattan Valley."

I can respect that. I wasn't ignoring your post when I posted. I am glad that you are making the distinction, and letting others become aware of it. I actually live a few blocks uptown from that border over the park. I love the area and I buy things over there frequently. Even though people down cheap bargain stores on this forum they have their place in life. Some of them have closed, along with some of the family style restaurants over there, probably due to increased commercial rents and the stress on the "UWS". Great places to go to with friends for a casual meal.
