THE BRONX - Parents in the southwest Bronx want to make sure Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio keeps his campaign promise about making struggling schools a top priority.
The New Settlement Parent Action Committee held a public meeting to demand changes in District 9, which they say is the third lowest performing school district in the city.
The group already came up with several recommendations for the soon-to-be mayor, including more teacher-parent involvement, making schools more community based, and providing more resources to struggling schools and Spanish-speaking students.

The parents also want a schools chancellor who will work to close the achievement gap between high and low performing areas.
Members are sending their recommendations to the new administration, and are hoping to meet with de Blasio in January.
