Does anyone know if The Chelsea is a good hotel to stay? It has some long term residents, and its feel is the sort that attracted me to New York to begin with.

Most of us don't stay at hotels in NY because we live here. You need to check online ratings or guidebooks.

The online reviews are mixed, but I get the impression that it's a bit of a dive, but has lots of character and culture. That would be what I'd like, but I was hoping for a local person to give me an impression.

Is it near the Chinatown in Manhattan?

I can answer that one. No -- not even close.

You can look HERE for a general idea of where Chinatown is located.

It says that New York Chinatown is the largest in the US, but I had thought it was San Fransisco.

So what kind of neighbourhood is the Chelsea located in? A slum?

Chelsea is FAR from a slum. I'm not sure why biggyboy says he doesn't like it - it must just be personal preference. Chelsea has a ton of very cool restaurants and bars, plus that hotel is only a few blocks from the number one gallery district in NY, so if you like art, you're in luck. Also there's plenty of shopping nearby - there's a Whole Foods and a bunch of larger chain stores if you're looking for that sort of thing.

Also the hotel is right near the 23rd St. and 8th Ave subway where you can get the E and C trains, plus it's only one block to get the 1 train, and one more block for the F and V. So it's very well located and in my opinion, in a more interesting neighborhood than all those midtown hotels (certainly more interesting than the neighborhood where the New Yorker hotel is located).

Maybe there is a wikipedia article on Chelsea? you could google it.

i think my son and i stayed at a hotel near the chelsea hotel. it's called the Four Points Sheraton Chelsea Hotel. it was a very nice place to stay and we walked everywhere up town and down town from there even at night. we stayed on the main streets at night so we wouldn't get lost, but we didn't feel uncomfortable in the area at all.

So what is the name of the suburb called? The Chelsea suburb? I want to ask my friends who live in the tri-cities area.

The Chelsea neighborhood isn't a suburb -- it's on the West Side of Manhattan.
