Hi, I'm just curious about what a typical (or not) new yorker thinks about the Los Angeles area, cities, their people, and if you have been in a specific city, what you think about it, what you like and dislike; and what city in LA is your favorite, if any.
Thanks.

I have met many totally cool people from LA -- here in New York. They all left to come and live here. Except if they were from Santa Monica. Which is pretty much like the Upper West Side, except less crowded, no subways and a beach.

Miles of suburban hell, full of Celebrities who practice Jewish mysticism, Mexican gangsters, homeless tent cities and air more worse than the smoking ten packs day.

Most New Yorkers don't think about LA and if they do they tend to say nice things.

I plan to visit LA soon because I'm dying to visit rodeo drive.

Also most people at my job are from Cali. Very nice people. Very open minded. Can't say the same for their peers on city data.

The West Side ...Malibu down to Redondo Beach is beautiful. I didn't care for anything inland when I lived there. Hollywood was fun maybe once or twice then I never went back.

Likes: lots of space, great for outdoor activities, fantastic scenery, superior public university, shorter flights to Asia
Dislikes: traffic/limited metro system, lack of seasons, inferior opera/ballet, longer flights to Europe
Favorite LA city: Manhattan Beach

I always wanted to go to LA one day and see what's it's like, especially the northern sections along Sunset and S. Monica Blvds.

LA requires a major adjustment for a NY'er I think. I grew up in NJ and have lived in LA for 8 years. I thought oh it's just another big city. Oh man I was wrong. Of course money is the great equalizer so if you have the income it won't be so drastic. But you are going from a vertical lifestyle to horizontal. From being in constant physical proximity to people to living a third of your life in your car. Hell I walk by people who are just sleeping or sitting in their parked cars all the time.

The air quality is horrendous however. Needless to say the closer to the beach the better.

LA is the least interesting city to me in California. Once you drive up the coast an hour or more...now THAT is worth moving for. THAT'S where you start to get the anything is possible, west or bust vibe.

LA is really a place to just visit for a week every so often do some hip stuff and then say you were in LA and did some hip stuff.

Unless you are an extravert in which case it will be Paradise. Don't forget to lease a BMW or Mercedes at minimum. Even the Pizza Hut delivery guy drove a Mercedes (not joking).
