Do they move when they feel the ring or are the still oblivious? I tried something similar with no ring, just my kind of making the knuckles of my hand push hard into their back and it had simply no effect whatsoever.

I give up my seat to people who are clearly pregnant, the elderly, and the seriously/clearly disabled. I'll also give up my seat to people with young children, although if the child is in a stroller, then I may or may not get up so that the parent can sit down (it all depends on whether the parent looks like s/he needs a break). Most of the times, though, on crowded trains/buses, I don't even sit down so that I don't have to deal with any awkward situations.
What about the older heavy-set homeless looking man that smells like fresh feces? He usually rides the E/F line through Manhattan and Queens. What do you do when he enters your train?
