Hello,

Does anyone have any insight as to how safe this part of East Harlem is for two females in their early 20s? We're not from the area and will of course be exercising common sense and not flashing cash or phones etc around. We'll also likely be regularly catching public transport.

Also, how can we avoid standing out as tourists?

I live very very close to this block. Will you be living there? Will you be coming home at nighttime or day time? Need more info. Its not a bad block, but not the best. You are only two blocks from the subway on 116 and lex.

We'll be staying there for a week. After researching the area we've decided that we probably won't be out after dark. What likely level of risk does coming home at night (let's say before 10pm) pose?

I think if youre nervous about looking like a tourist, you will look like one. This neighborhood doesnt get many "tourists or visitors", except if they are going to the target/costco mall on 117 but its in the opposite direction on the FDR Drive.
Ive walked home from the subway around that time, and there are many shady characters out at the time around lexington when you are coming off the train, especially on a hot summer night. But you just have to use your street smarts, look over your shoulder, make sure no one follows you into the building, etc. This isnt the worst neighborhood, but it isnt the best and like I said toursists dont frequent here.

Why wouldn't it be safe? Try the Puerto Rican coffee on 116th street closer to 3rd Ave on the southside of the street. It's a bakery but I can't remember the name.
