Yahoo! Issues 'Greenest City in America' Challenge With Reward of Hybrid Taxi Fleet*|*Reuters.com

Article from 2006... Top 10 Greenest Cities in America
The Top 10 Green Cities in the U.S.: 2006 (http://www.thegreenguide.com/doc/113/top10cities - broken link)

Is this our year? Our year to prove everybody who says our city pollutes too much, has dirty water, etc. is full of it?

Well, I did some research on it. We use less energy than San Francisco, Dallas, and of course less than Los Angeles, Atlanta, etc. NYC is one of only four cities in America where water does not require treatment thanks to the Catskill Mountains watershed. And the Brooklyn Bridge "going green" this year (Brooklyn Bridge to have lower-wattage LED lights installed next year), the greatest amount of green buildings being constructed, new hybrid cabs and buses, energy-efficient street lights, etc.

OH MY GOD! THIS CITY IS AMAZING!

Yeah, high density cities tend to have less waste. Because it is so huge it will take a long time to make noticeable changes, but it is definitely a good start.

No way will NYC win this competition. We were named the second dirtiest large US city in 2006. When it comes to "greening" NYC is far behind places like Portland. We have a long way to go before we even break the top 10.

That's not true at all.
Are you an environmental scientist like these people?

Fact is, NYC uses far less energy than Dallas and San Francisco. Hard to believe, isn't it?

There's a difference between "dirty" and "green." They're obviously talking street trash such as newspapers, grocery bags, and other trash can trash. "Green" refers to energy-efficiency, elctrical usage, pollution, etc.

NYC has always used mass transit way more than other cities and NYers walk more to all this contributes to less gas use. As far as cities like Charlotte or San diego you have to drive everywhere for everything. NYC does have pollution but what do expect when you 8 million people in 320 miles. Per Capita we are way more eco friendly than other cities.
