Anyone ever been made uncomfortable when walking by police after being mistreated by an officer? Any tips for getting comfortable again? Thanks you.

Stop committing crimes.

Lol but seriously just go on about your business. Contrary to popular belief cops don't bother you unless you break the law.

Just walk up and talk to an officer. I think you'll find that 99.9% are very nice and approachable people. I know it has become a trend or fad to look at cops like the enemy but trust me they are not. It is a very tough job and the media jumps at the opportunity to bury them whenever they are forced to make a questionable call or have a lapse of judgment. They are people like everyone else who just want to make it home to their families.

Quite honestly...I have friends/family who are cops, and I am not anti-Police in the least . BUT, I have had some negative experiences with the NYPD, which did leave me feeling wary afterwards.

Just last year, two undercover DTs rolled up on me while I was waiting in my car at a hydrant for my girlfriend. They asked me for my ID, which I provided but couldn't tell me why they were stopping me and were generally hostile. If it matters, I'm white and have never been arrested in my life. At this point my girlfriend walks out and they ask her for ID too....she hands them her ID and her SBA card. They pat me on the shoulder and say 'have a nice day, buddy'. I was literally just sitting in my car, playing words with friends on my phone....not sure what looked suspicious to them, but at the very least they could have treated me with less hostile undertones.

Sometimes the cops get bored and they go looking to solve problems that don't exist. If they keep hounding you for questions then they're on a fishing expedition, so all you need to do is ask if you're under arrest and if you're free to go.

This is where race often matters though. If your white chances are they will be willing to let you go easier. If your black or latino you have an attitude and you're questioning authority.

It is a two way street though. My experience has been that many cops look at the average citizen as a nuisance and like they are doing you a favor when in fact we are the ones paying the taxes that pay their salary. My experiences dealing with cops when I have had a problem and have had to ask for help have been mostly negative unfortunately. That stuff stays with you.

The first thing I wondered was what neighborhood you were in. NYPD is known to bother white people in neighborhoods that are mostly black or latino because it is assumed you are there for drugs. Also very occasionally they do go after prescription drug dealing. The typical prescription drug dealer or buyer is white.
