It hits me to my core when I see homeless people, because I look at them and realize that if something serious happens to me, that could be me at any given time. NYC is a hard place to live and once you hit that bad stretch unless you have a good family support or even friendship support you too can end up wandering the streets with two suitcases looking for your next meal and a warm place to sleep.

How does on tackle homelessness is anybody guess. You can build apartments to house them but then how do they keep those apartments and who helps integrate them back in the workforce. If you give them housing subsidy that's great but at the same time you need to see that they get a job and be self sufficient eventually.
I think that is the biggest issue is okay get them a place to live, but how do we get them be self sufficient

I get the increase in homelessness. I get that people also don't understand the difference between "panhandlers" and "chronic street homeless". What I don't understand are all those cross-breed, wolf-like, coyote looking dogs these people have... WHAT ARE THOSE?????!!!!!

Also I didn't know if you are white and homeless you have to be from Indiana either.
Who cares where they are from, they are definitely not from NYC. All these suburbs/middle america places unloading their social problems on NYC taxpayers. Send 'em back, I don't care what skin color they have. I don't mind if the city takes care of homeless people if they originate from here, but the rest should be billed to the place of origin or the feds.

When I moved to Manhattan during Koch's administration, there were lots of homeless on the streets. It was dangerous to walk in Central Park or take the subway above 96th even during the day. During the Dinkins' administration things deteriorated with aggressive car window washers, street begging, subway train monologues by beggars, and intimidation by street criminals and thugs, day or night. The murder rate was around 2000 a year, if I recall.

When Rudy was elected the crime disappeared and Manhattan was a wonderful place to live day to day for a few years.

New Yorkers elected de Blasio. Those who voted for him and those who were too busy to vote get what they deserve...de Blasio.

You clearly never spent much time in NYC.

Does 25+ years of working and living in Manhattan count as "never spent much time in NYC"?

It's not the mayor. It is a combination of things - out-of-control real estate speculation, housing problems in other states that encouraged people to come here for easier "benefits" ...

New York is not a "great" place to be now, granted, especially in comparison to what it was - as most people know who actually live here - but to say it is the doing of one person would be disingenuous. We didn't vote for him but many people who did would agree, it's not so great here now.

I am not even defending him, just think it's better to look at the actual causes of things, bigger picture.

Nope. It's all internet posts and claiming to be a student somewhere without mentioning the "online curriculum" component.

I disagree. My safety was bad under the leadership of Koch and Dinkins. I was robbed and assaulted on the A train and in Washington Heights in broad daylight. I never had a single problem at any time of the day or night under the leadership of Giuliani and Bloomberg.
