When I moved to Manhattan during Koch's administration, there were lots of homeless on the streets. It was dangerous to walk in Central Park or take the subway above 96th even during the day. During the Dinkins' administration things deteriorated with aggressive car window washers, street begging, subway train monologues by beggars, and intimidation by street criminals and thugs, day or night. The murder rate was around 2000 a year, if I recall.
When Rudy was elected the crime disappeared and Manhattan was a wonderful place to live day to day for a few years.
New Yorkers elected de Blasio. Those who voted for him and those who were too busy to vote get what they deserve...de Blasio.
During the Dinkins days NYC had great night life. Today night life in NYC sucks, all the same type of faceless people, places, and lack of variety.
I disagree. My safety was bad under the leadership of Koch and Dinkins. I was robbed and assaulted on the A train and in Washington Heights in broad daylight. I never had a single problem at any time of the day or night under the leadership of Giuliani and Bloomberg.
Crime had declined steadily for the four or five years before Giuliani was voted in. Maybe longer ...?
Perhaps you were not luckily enough to be on the train at the right time.

No. Murders maxed out in 1990. Then fell ever so slightly for the next few years, while still remaining higher than the years prior to 1990. Guiliani came into office in 1994. That's when you really start to see significant decreases. Simultaneously you started to see populations to start increasing again as well. But forget statistics when you can just make stuff up.

But you shouldn't make things up.
The "stats" around Giuliani are propaganda, and highly contested propaganda at that.
For some reason, odd because I was very very young, I preferred Giuliani as mayor.
But I am smart enough to understand the facts.
I dislike the knee-jerk conservatism, which I associate with middle America, now his usual (most vocal - such as here) supporters. Don't want to be in such a distasteful crowd.
Random question, did YOU live here in 1990 ? in 1994 ? Must be yes to speak with such authority.
Perhaps you were not luckily enough to be on the train at the right time.
Bull****. I was on the A train going to a volunteer job on a weekend day to the Bronx when I was assaulted and robbed by two very big black men who also robbed others on the train, including beating a white man to a pulp for his gold chain. The good ol' days, right?

This happens every day, and it has happened every day for as long as anyone can recall.
AFTER 1994, for the edification of your colleague here as well, I was robbed for the first and only time ever. So ... from this, I should conclude that crime increased exponentially after 1994. Right ?
I riled up another conservative though, probably two, and that's fine for me for the night.
I should be nicer, he he.

She wasn't here back then, so she wouldn't know. All the robberies, stolen cars, graffiti, etc...
