I thought that we had a law requiring markets to give out rainchecks if they were out of a sale item...but I haven't been able to substantiate it.
I'm asking because I've been annoyed lately by markets telling me "We can't give out rainchecks until Thursday." Well, if I'm not in the neighborhood, I don't want to keep coming back.
I don't know if there is a raincheck law in NYC. But I know whenever I ask for a raincheck for an item on sale that is not in stock in the store when I am physically there, I get at the time I request it. I have never been told to come back another day just to get a raincheck!

What stores are not giving you rainchecks? BTW, NYS does not regulate rainchecks:
The two stores where this has been happening are Met Foods and the unnamed one on First/106th.
I somehow thought it was the city regulating them, not the state.
I have never tried to ask for a raincheck at Met Foods when I lived near one of their stores. I never thought about back then. I have gotten rainchecks at CVS, Keyfood and Pioneer supermarkets without any problems.
It's store by store, no law involved.
Most stores offer them so as not to get the reputation for bait and switch.
Others just prefer to bait and switch.
Ask for rain checks at local supermarkets or Rite Aide all the time, and am not a bit ashamed to say it before God and the world.
When the now gone Food Emporium had Eight 0'Clock coffee in the large bags on "buy one get one free" or "buy one get the second half off" darn skippy I got rain checks if they were sold out of what I wanted. Ditto staples such as olive oil, sugar, toilet paper, paper towels, etc....
