Hm, I was just thinking the other day that maybe one of the problems with cops, nationwide, it the culture of covering for each other.
Oh make no mistake, the Blue Wall of Silence is still around. But federal government has made it clear over the years they will do all they can to break any department/LE agency that does not comply. When you consider how much federal aid flows to local LE agencies you can see where that leads. That and DOJ or FBI have other screws they can turn to get what they want. No, it does not always work but more so today than say in the 1970's and Serpico's time.
The guy was caught between a rock and a hard place, to talk or not to talk, both of which would likely have had him a dead man.
So he just took a shortcut to the inevitable.
Crooked cops deserve the worst punishment imaginable, but yet it is hard not to empathize with how scared the guy must have been for the last couple days of his life.
We all know that the NYPD is as corrupt as it was pre-Serpico. I hope this suicide doesn't sidetrack any active probe.
Any thoughts on the possibility he might have been murdered to shut him up?

Don't know about being a "dead man"; we're talking about taking gifts and doing other things like offering protection to a businessman IIRC. Hardly on the same level as shaking down drug dealers/prostitutes, selling drugs, doing hits for hire, etc....
Not invited to BBQ's and other friends and family events? Yes. Given the cold shoulder due to being known as a rat? Yes. Those sort of things *may* happen, but then again who knows. Depending upon what information this guy had (if any) and passed along it might have all blown over or even been a nonevent.
Still say something else was stressing the man and the FBI probe just piled on.
Meh one less Vison zero proponent deblasio crony to deal with. Can't say I feel sorry for the man. He obviously knew something bad was gonna come up. Bad enough that he decided to eat his gun. He doesn't deserve the honor of an NYPD dignified funeral either.
