It's the week end service changes . Seems like almost every week end there are maintenance related service disruptions on the 2 and or 5 lines. Fortunately, it is also the case that week end express bus service can be really fast. Often on week ends I have the choice of a 10 or 15 minutes extra subway ride which can bring a 40 min ride to almost an hour or a 20 minute express bus ride to or from midtown. Yes ,it costs more but with the bus so much faster it is a no brainer. During the week express busses are much slower so it's not worth it.
Agree, it's this weekend crap. Weekday is at its highest in over 50 years.
Well it would be wouldn't it? People have to get to work and or school.
On weekends will often just take the bus because traffic is lighter and thus things move faster.
Haven't ridden the new SAS on weekends so cannot say how things are compared to the IRT. That line either local or express is always having service issues on weekends it seems so tend to avoid.
My kids often end up on the bus on weekends because the line they need is shut down. I find myself driving or taking Lyft places I normally would take the train to because trains I need are shut down. That said, I think it is great they are maintaining/improving things and am not worried about the overall dip, I'm sure it will be temporary.
I think there's more and more things to do in neighborhoods nowadays. No need to travel to Manhattan anymore. Plus more people staying home watching Netflix and Trump.

This is a very good point. I know I have been leaving The Bronx less and less these days. I live and work in The Bronx but still used to go to Manhattan at least a couple of times a week. ... now it's once or twice a month .... maybe. Most of my old Brooklyn neighborhood friends NEVER leave Brooklyn.
As the outer boroughs get more "gentrified" Manhattan becomes less and less relevant.
Throw in the crappy weekend service and 4K TV and you got your low ridership.
Same reason why people don't go to football games anymore.
