When I see old school videos of New York, the bodegas seemed to have a low key but neat appearance.
Nowadays, most of them are fugly! Stock images of various food on the windows, and really ugly signs, often with the color changing lights. It's almost like the owners go out of their way to make them ugly as possible!
I know what you mean.....thats because the Arabic bodega owners found out they can double their profits by combining their Crown Fried Chickens and bodegas in the same space, its like having 2 stores in 1, and now they dont have to break the law by selling lucys because they're making more legal money. So I guess it's the new way of attracting business with the flashy signs and what-not. Evolving business model.

When did NYC bodegas become so ugly? IMO they have become more aesthetically pleasing. In the past, bodegas were hideous to look at. With gentrification, they have been sprucing things up to attract the neighborhood newcomers.

True. Many now have those craft beer signs in the window.
I have no interest in Katz and as previously noted I like national chains like Subways and Chipotle. I like gentrification because it reduces the number of delis and bodegas. I'm someone who likes Trader Joe's wnd Whole Foods. Not a fan of local places unless they are cheap ethnic restaurants and primarily Asian or Latin.
What about pizza? Would you go with Pizza Hut or Dominos over your local pizza joint?

Gentrifying neighborhoods like yours are also the reason a lot of bodegas are going for the faux wood trim look, there's a couple of those around my way too

Asian and Latino NYC restaurants serve lots of food cheaply, so no need for chains for that!
But pizza and delis are just as cheap if not cheaper in many cases.
What about for fried chicken?
