When I see old school videos of New York, the bodegas seemed to have a low key but neat appearance.
Nowadays, most of them are fugly! Stock images of various food on the windows, and really ugly signs, often with the color changing lights. It's almost like the owners go out of their way to make them ugly as possible!

I think they don't care anymore because in many places, the instant the lease is up the landlord will jack up the rent by 10k or more.
Plus cigs, beer, toiler paper, sodas, juice can all be bought at CVS or Duane Reade/Walgreens. These corporate stores are ultimately the replacement of many bodegas. That and higher end delis.
Honestly a lot of the more run down bodegas are only fronts for money laundering anyway.

The clientele for fresh cornerstore produce left the boros, and good riddance, except for the fact that we have these fugly bodegas now instead.

No one is crying about it. The OP grew up in LI and has some ghetto fetish or something which is interesting. Though I must say that I loved those 10 cents boxes of candies being washed down with the 50 cent tropical fantasy or quarter juice from the corner bodegas back in the day. Also I remember that some bodegas actually had a small selection of produce like plantains, papayas, and some yams.

I was feeling some anti-immigrant sentiment coming from the OP and NyWriterdude. Maybe its just the OPs suburban upbringing. And we all know NyWriterdude has issues of his own. Dude just doesn't feel comfortable in his own skin.
I don't know...some bodegas have always been tacky and run down, while some were a little nicer (those would be the ones you'd feel okay getting a sandwich or roll from). I don't think much has changed...they still vary in quality and decor.

I would rather buy from a national chain actually, and I often do. So the answer is neither! I do Often eat at Chinese, Indian, Colombian, Dominican, and Mexican places,

The OP is Ecuadorian or something along those lines but probably doesn't identify with immigrants and the like. I guess it's a phase he's in, i don't know. We all had that little denial of being ghetto/immigrant/of color/poor or otherwise different because {I grew up in Long Island/went to Columbia/married white upper class/ or otherwise fill in the blank}.
