I'll be moving to the NYC area to attend graduate school at John Jay College for 2 years. I need some suggestions in regards to finding a cheap/safe/comfortable place to live. My monthly budget is no more than $1200.00
I would prefer a single room with my own kitchen and bathroom if possible. I'm considering the areas around Queens....but I'm open to any suggestions.
In Queens try the areas of Astoria that are near the N train, or the areas that are near the R (different lines). You could also look at the parts of Woodside and Jackson Heights that are near the R train (in Woodside- Northern Blvd stop and in JH the Roosevelt Ave stop). Also Elmhurst is served by the R.
Any of these options would give you a one-train commute (with a bit of a walk at the end) and it is still possible to find a studio for $1200 or under in any of these neighborhoods - though I have heard that in Astoria, the closer you are to the subway, the more expensive it gets.
Check google maps in the vicinity of these areas and you can see where the train stations are. Then check that against the map at mta.info. And search these boards for info about the nature of the neigbhorhoods. IMO, Astoria is best for a young person who wants to go out at night in his own neighborhood, but the other places are fine too.
Depends if you want to commute. If there's and apartment in Manhattan that's roughly the same price in Queens, please choose Manhattan.
I don't think you've actually LOOKED at rents in Manhattan....Why should he choose Manhattan? YOU might prefer it, but he might not either prefer nor be able to afford it.

Actually, I have looked at rent in Manhattan.
I just think if you live outside Manhattan, you'll feel like you're just outside, looking onto the rest of the world.
Try living in NYC for 6-12 months. If you don't like it, move. Try the experience.
But if he can't AFFORD Manhattan, that's not going to work. Not everyone has an unlimited budget. Mick Jagger said it best: You can't always get what you want.

He was pretty clear when he said he can spend no more than $1200 and he wants his own kitchen and bathroom. How many roommate situations are you going to find where you have your own kitchen? Sure sometimes there are 2bed 2 bath apts, so he might have his own bathroom but so far I've never heard of a 2 bed 2 bath 2 kitchen apartment.
That's why I was suggesting Queens. If he absolutely must stay in Manhattan, there is always Inwood or Washington Heights where you can get a one bedroom apt for $1200.
Actually, come to think of it, Inwood might not be a bad option as it is on the A train and that goes directly to Columbus Circle.
