I'm hoping for suggestions for getaways that are relatively close to NYC (no flying to get there) and that don't require driving either to get there or while there. There are 4 of us, 2 adults and 2 teenagers. We're not looking for a vacation entirely focused on the beach, and have already been to Philadelphia, Boston and DC. Help! We were going to go to Montreal/Quebec but won't have passports ready in time. Your help is greatly appreciated.
Yeah you can take the metro north up there, there's also the Poconos or Jersey Shore or Long Beach Island (there are shuttles that you can take there).
Bear mountain, rhode island mansion tour, poconos (former ballys) resort or camel back mountains.
Dont forget the Manhattan landmarks for day trips. As a nyer', this is one thing i hardly take advantage of. Also govenors island, or all day boating tour of nyc . Even the double decker bus tours will be enjoyable, especialy with the hop on/off option.
I appreciate the suggestions, thank you. I should have mentioned that we'd like to stay for a couple of nights. Part of the problem is keeping everyone happy. Half of us like hiking, half like the beach, half like amusement parks lol. Because of that, half us us will be unhappy with a vacation that focuses on any one of those things.
why wouldn't you use a car, why subject yourself to a miserable vacation.
Just rent one and go to the Poconos
My husband never learned how to drive, and I haven't driven in almost a decade (after an accident). Vacation and driving doesn't go hand in hand in my mind.
Options are limited without a car I know. I'll think about it.
Niagara Falls and/or Toronto! One can take Amtrak from NYC. In Niagara Falls one can even walk across the border (if staying on the American side which seems to be cheaper and no passport necessary) and in Toronto there is good public transportation.
Also one can go down to Atlantic City (NJ) by bus or out to the Hamptons (Long Island) by LIRR and stay in these places for a few days even without a car.
Another options might be Baltimore, MD or certain towns in Cape Cod (MA) which one can get to by bus from NYC?!
