Nope. Cheaper to use the vehicle you own and on a well maintained vehicle, there is NO reason to "baby" it. I've got 300k on a 2001 and also hope to see 500k with it, but I had no hesitation to do a ~5k mile round trip drive with it a couple years ago. There's simply Nothing like being in your own vehicle.
I like the freedom of -- IF I get a flat tire -- or IF there's an accident -- I call and get another car, and keep going on my trip -- and it's not MY car that's messed up....or worse ....now I'm back to car payments.
Never. I babied my Chrysler 300, and like you had visions of 500k (and I thought I had a legit chance). Sadly had to take her off the road last month with 239k miles on her. And I had a bumper-to-bumper lifetime warranty on her that kept her going for 1.5 years once problems began to occur. I loved my car, and is the reason I enjoyed many of the road trips I took. I wish I was rich enough to afford two cars - my "special" one and a daily driver. But I'm not.
I guess my point is my car is the 2nd most expensive thing I have besides my house. I want to enjoy my money, not place it on a shelf to save it. But that's just me.

Why not service your own car, I've saved thousands in labor by servicing my Mercedes 300sdl.
I usually do. If my own vehicle were to have a breakdown far from home it would be a hassle to have to find a shop, wait for the repair, possibly have to take time off work, etc..
With a rental I can simply call an 800 number and tell them to bring me another one.
No. I bought the car specifically to drive it. So that is what I do: I drive it.
Also, my dogs travel with me. They like to travel in their own car, which is set up to accommodate them, and I don't like to worry about keeping dog drool out of the rental car.
Trips away from home, I am sometimes pulling a travel trailer. Can you even rent a car that is powerful enough and set up to pull a travel trailer?

That's my take, based on the distance. I figure I'll use my own car in a radius of what an outer-limits AAA tow would be reasonable for, maybe 250-300 miles or so.
