The answer usually lies within. There could be something wrong with you that you are unaware of but which others pick up on immediately. That is often the case. This problem tends to get magnified by the easiness in finding scapegoats for our own flaws. We are all guilty of this to varying degrees. Sometimes it becomes a major impediment.
Im not buying it. I guess if I was super experienced in the restaurant world Id land a job in a week or maybe less. This was hard work for me but I doubt that most people just get hired in a day. I could be wrong but over the years I used to land simple jobs in NYC much easier and its a different story today.
As for places in Manhattan that only hire people of color or only specific races only. That was the most disturbing part of my job search and I guess many people deny this is occuring in Manhattan but I know what I observed. I get along fine with people but when I walk into a place and all I see are dozens of employees all of one ethnicity it makes me think it is actually their team as a whole that would not do well with any outsiders, like xenaphobia or some mixture of bigotry something. Must be for the best.
A lot of Irish do this as well. They come in on a tourist visa, get a bartending gig and never leave. I know some personally. They are good people, though. Some end up paying someone to "marry" them so they can get citizenship. I've even been asked and was offered $20k.
