Did you know the max benefit for SNAP for a single person is only $192/month?

Did you also know, maximum gross monthly income for a single person from all categories is well under $20, per year?

And if you think once approved surviving on food stamps alone is easy, then once again you are living in a dream world.

As for "When I was in between jobs, I simply got unemployment and went to the soup kitchen (after paying my bills on unemployment, money was tight"

There you go again, using your pseudo-liberal and (supposedly) upper class background to justify how everyone else *should* be living.

First and foremost as have said repeatedly am not entirely sure you even live in NYC. So your anecdotal accounts often fall flat, because they bear no resemblance to life as what those of us who do live here see and or know.

Next as anyone can tell you who has been on unemployment it does not go far nor last very long (26 weeks, aside from the recent series of extensions). So either people are gaming the system (working on the side and not reporting income), and or have other assets/income they are tapping to make up the difference.

Maximum unemployment benefit in NYS is $420/week. Most get less, much less. Even those who get the full amount have trouble surviving. So if *YOU* have found some magical formula or way of doing so perhaps you ought to patent it and or write a book. Put some of that famous Ivy League education you keep reminding us you have to good use.

Keep telling you and anyone else that actually *LIVES* in NYC that doubts my words. Go outside any supermarket, Starbucks, convenience store or whatever and just wait and watch.
I am too busy to loiter around the supermarket and Starbucks. That's for people like you who apparently hasn't worked in a very long time. If it helps you get off to do that in your old age, then go straight ahead and do it.

Are you on disability Bugsy? A lot of gay men who contracted HIV got disability. Is that your situation? Are you on welfare and this is why you're so able to hang around and observe people go through the garbage for food?

But back to when I lost my job, ANY working person who makes money on the books can get unemployment. Any person period, even if they are not a citizen can go to the soup kitchen. So I'm not sure what you mean by upper class background. Anyone with any class, even a minimum wage person has enough class to not go through the garbage.

The only other way I could see you being so familiar with garbage hunters is if you have a massive substance abuse problem, spend all your money except for rent, and have to go to the garbage for food. Are you an alcoholic or junkie?

I have had my share of disagreements with people on this forum. But can we all agree on thing?

There is no such thing as a normal person who goes through the garbage to eat food. I don't care that someone is supposedly short on money for food (food stamps, soup kitchens, etc).

Someone going through the garbage for food either has mental health issues, or is an alcoholic or junkie that spends money of their available money aside from rent on booze/drugs. I'm speaking of someone who has their own place and not a homeless person, obviously.

A person going through the same garbage that rats, cockroaches, AND other animals will be checking out as SERIOUS issues. Probably health issues too (think of all the diseases and no Bugsy, this is not someone speaking as an upper class person).

While its not my cup of tea, dumpster diving doesn't have to be anywhere as gross as you make it seem. This is especially true for those who are essentially waiting for the moment supermarkets, etc., are throwing out perfectly good food.

I can agree with this. In a city like NY where handouts are common, no mentally stable person will resort to the trash as a first option.

It's not perfectly good food. It's old. And if you get sick from it, you can't sue because like a fool you went in the garbage. You guys are junkies/drunks because who else justifies going in the garbage for food under any circumstances.

Much of it is perfectly good food as I wrote that isn't going to make you sick. Just because stores can't/don't sell items past their "sell by" dates most of the time doesn't mean that the items have actually gone bad. In fact, it's often far from the case. https://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2016/...-sell-by-date/

Food you call "old" was just as old ten minutes before it was removed from store shelves and thrown away. Yet, one paid full price for that item while a dumpster diver got that item for free. Again, it's not my cup of tea, but dumpster diving doesn't have to be as gross as some make it seem.

Am not sure what you're running your mouth about, but dumpster divers aren't that complicated to spot. Can spot a homeless person in a heartbeat because I'm a New Yorker with street smarts.
