I went out today and found it not so bad. That's because I was wearing all new heavy-duty winter gear. I have promised myself for years that "this winter I'm going to buy a warm _____ (coat/hat), etc." and never exactly got around to it because my down jacket would suffice for nearly all but one week's worth of winter and by the time I got around to thinking of shopping in January, all the winter stuff was off the shelves already.
So...today I wore my UNIQLO thermal under layers, a new heavier down coat, and one of those Russian style hats but without real fur. I was really quite comfortable. The Manhattan streets are a bit emptier than usual but there were plenty of people out.

Yeah, as long as you know how to bundle up properly and mentally prepare yourself for the cold, you actually find it not to be all that bad. But I think today is more windy than yesterday. Haven't stepped out yet but will have to soon so, we'll see how bad it is today (as opposed to yesterday).
try Wisconsin or Minnesota ...an androgynous hipster from Williamsburg told me that
To be fair places like Chicago, and so forth do have far colder winter weather normally than New York. This time however it is getting real with temps in the negative teens. That do be *cold*.

True but that means NYers are not used to several days straight of these temperatures that are closer to zero degrees F than the freezing mark!
Maybe recent arrivals and or those below a certain age; but came up during the 1970's and through 1990's clearly recall long periods of temps below freezing especially with wind chill.
Grew up on Staten Island remember? A place surrounded by water with plenty of high hills, very little public transportation besides buses.
Trust me you don't know cold until you've stood at the Saint George ferry waiting twenty minutes for a bus in temps even when say 30 degrees is colder because of the wind and being near water.
Was all over SI this Christmas holiday, from Bulls Head to Todt Hill Westerleigh and Silver Lake, things were much colder to me than when got back into Manhattan.
Think many have been spoiled by these moderate to often very warm winters NYC has been having lately. If you look at pictures of NYC from the 1970s or even 1980's taken during November or December you often see snow (remember that stuff?) and or people bundled up tight.
Thermals and a good pair of socks are a must when it is this cold. With a good hat of course. Scarfs can make all the difference too. Winter is a must for the fashionable.
Omg, so true, the freaking wind tunnel and outdoor platforms
