yes u can probably find a small 300 sq. ft sweatbox for that price range. and im being generous.

Maybe a room. if you have roomates, you could probably get something for $2400 and split it by putting up a wall. it will be cramped, but if you really want to live in chelsea...

Right - I would think that would be the only way - to get a one bedroom for $2400 and have 2 people living in the apartment with one staying in the living room.

It's pretty simple to find out price ranges by going onto craigslist and doing a search. If most of the prices are around $1500-$2000 for a share, then you can assume that's what you'll be paying (even if you see one or two for $1000). General rule of thumb is if one listing is far below the others in cost that either it's not real, really sucks or will be gone before you can snap your fingers.
