I recall back in the day, you tipped for table service, not counter service. Now you can't go anywhere without a tip jar being around or the tip essentially being expected just for taking an order. I ordered a cortado a little while ago from Joe Coffee. The cashier was nice and pleasant, but seemed to be that way so that people would tip her. I found it off putting because being courteous should be expected. When I have a customer that I'm taking care of I'm always courteous and certainly don't expect anything for essentially doing my job. Discuss...
It’s only considered out of control if the costumer is cheap.
From what I see, only people who worked a job that involved tip, understand the importance of it.
I always understood tipping to be done for table service, NOT counter service. That's my point. This has nothing to do with frugality because I DO tip and tip at least 20%.
That's what I thought, but now I find myself tipping more and more for counter service. I think counter service shouldn't be a given in terms of tipping. You're just taking an order. Table service is another matter entirely. Now there are some baristas that I get regularly that I develop a relationship with where they also make my coffee so I will tip because I already know that they make my drinks the way I like them and go above and beyond to do so, but I have a problem with tipping for something I haven't even received yet. If I tip and the drink sucks then I just tipped for counter service.
Absolutely. There are many take out establishments that all but force you to tip. Over the past few years I've noticed it usually goes like this.
1. You place your order
2. You hand the cashier your card
3. They swipe your card and swivel around their iPad
4. You're presented with a tip screen
Usually it's the square app, but some have different software that prevents you from selecting "no tip." Rather, you have to make a custom tip and set the amount to $0.00 otherwise you'll have no choice but to pay more. I tip for excellent service and even sub-par service if I'm sitting in, but the culture is definitely getting insane.

I agree. I refuse to tip for counter service, if by counter service you mean pure takeout. If I'm eating at the counter, I'll leave a tip. Note, I refuse to tip for taxi service, too.
I alway tip bar and table service 20%+ unless they suck. I only give counter service a tip at coffee places where I also order a sandwich and sit at a table to work. If I’m ordering a drip coffee or a sandwich to go. No tip.
Well, maybe if the girl at the counter is hot... here’s a buck, sexy!
