Had Amazon chosen somewhere a bit further out in Brooklyn/BK/Qns they would've had better chance not getting complaints. LIC here is already a hipster spot and lots of developers already over bought the area looking for a big company to move in to drive up the area even higher price than current.

Amazon coming into LIC would push gentrification beyond what has happened in Brooklyn the past decade.

I think somebody inside pushed for LIC, it's not the best place to put a big job center. For decades LIC has been waiting for another big company other than Citibank to no avail because strategically it is not the best commute for people around other than people who live in towns nearby.

If you were living in Brooklyn, the commute is pretty rough because there's not a single fast subway line that goes from Brooklyn to LIC.

The whole point is to offload traffic from Manhattan by creating jobs in outer boroughs, so a lot more people can reverse-commute or to not have to enter Manhattan. Right now we have a situation where trains are packed going one way and completely empty going the other way. Its simply inefficient use of infrastructure from transportation standpoint. Also, creating jobs in outer boroughs would decrease commute times.

Cool story, bro.

Google is spending $1 billion on its expansion in NYC. No incentives. No fanfare. No competition pitting cities against each other.

Yes the hipsters displaced people but now fear displacement. Their screams of gentrification in LIC are pathetic. As are their fake concerns for those who live in surrounding areas. When these people move into a neighborhood, they change it. They dont integrate into it. Not only do they chase out those who can no longer afford the rents or the property taxes, but also those businesses which catered to these people.

Yikes. I think this was a win/lose situation either way, I’m from Queens and I was torn on the whole issue.

And only transplants getting work and local businesses being forced to close. NYC and NYS could have worked out a deal with Amazon where that company worked with the city to develop plans to provide ladders of upward mobility in exchange for tax subsidies. They cannot negotiate with Google to do a thing as they have no leverage so its the same transplants flooding the city driving up living costs while vast swathes of NY residents remain marooned.

NYC cannot be Calcutta on the Hudson and expect to maintain quality of life.

And? what's your point?

Google may be spending $1B but Amazon is spending $0B. They WOULD have spent at least $4B every year on local wages if NIMBYs had half a brain, but apparently incentives aren't something that they can comprehend
