I just discovered that the little Murray Hill gourmet food shop, Todaro Brothers, has closed.
It's always sad when an established business closes, but I mention this in particular because it existed a full century, and was the classic family-owned business that you hope will do well. They were good about keeping long hours, crammed with interesting items, and made the nice gesture of end-of-day markdowns. They weren't cheap, but perhaps it was because they paid their staff decent salaries. I don't know if there were internal factors (like a death in the family), but I'm guessing that they were materially undermined by the arrival of Fairway just east, and then Trader Joe's just west.
