Not only that, neighborhoods should form self-defense leagues. Law-abiding citizens of NYC let themselves be disarmed, and be totally dependent upon the police for protection. Instead of wishing to be saved by daddy Giuliani, organize and get some HEAT. That's how you lower crime. Then save the police for real violent criminals in certain neighborhoods and take them back.

Take some basic fighting lessons too.

The problem with this (unless we all do it en masse) is that the bleeding hearts don't bleed for law abiding citizens, most especially citizens who wish to enjoy their inalienable rights under the second amendment. We would not get any Mets tickets. For us it would be straight to Bigfoot country for a few years upstate.

I was suggesting do it en masse, and screw what the bleeding hearts thing. People have to take care of themselves.

If it were that easy many ppl would have done it already. My guns wouldn't be sitting in Fort Lauderdale waiting for my permanent return.

What needs to happen is the laws need to change. However, this will never happen because the people, police, and politicians are against it.

The people are defenseless and the politicians and the cops are doing nothing. They will have to arm themselves in defiance of these stupid laws and they will have to vote certain politicians out.

It's easy to say that but when your life gets upended by the possibility of being civilly and criminally liable then s**t gets real. People have to think about their jobs and family.

This sounds like a proposal to form a new street gang, ie, for even more lawlessness than there already is. No need for more gangs, just allow NYPD to do their job, and have laws that punish criminals appropriately. Normal, mentally healthy, law-abiding citizens should of course be allowed to own and carry weapons for self defense, but (1) self-defense situations should be exceedingly rare in a civilized society (ie, a normally functioning NYPD and legal system should take care of crime prevention), and (b) the first person that actually does NOT look like he should have a firearms permit is NYWriterDude :-). There are some criteria of normality still needed to give somebody a gun - it shouldn't particularly be an anti-police guy who wants to organize a paramilitary force in NYC :-).

Late 70s early 80s, we had the block boys. dude will let out a loud obnoxious noise, and we all came out to fix things.

This worked. Word got around ,our block stayed safe.

The problem is that in NYC, you can be arm yourself or be a law abiding citizen, but not both. If the SCOTUS would rigorously enforce the Second Amendment on state and local governments, that would change.

Personally I'd like to see somewhere between 250,000 to 500,000 law abiding NYers carrying concealed handguns.
