Ice didn't exist prior to like 2002 and there were not open borders then. So... This logic doesn't fully check out, regardless of how you feel about ICE
Before ICE there was INS who invaded social clubs and worksites and grabbed whoever they could. Wicked people used to go to places where immigrants congregated in the 80s and yelled "Immigration!" just to start a stampede. INS used to go to worksites and given give a bit about women wailing that there was no one to pick up little Maria from daycare.
Those who fool themselves that deportations began only under ICE fool themselves. If someone not born in a country and lacks proper documentation to be a permanent resident and hasn't applied for citizenship risks being rounded up and deported.
Canada boasts about how aggressive they are in ensuring that undocumented migrants leave. You cannot get a job, access healthcare, or even rent a place unless you are legal and the landlords and employers are held liable. Yes in that liberal places that many "progressives" often cite as an example.

Most of that is not in dispute by me. Simply that getting rid of Ice = open borders is the fallacy both you and I have identified
Philly under Nutter was so much better than under john street. John street wanted to keep the hood. Nutter started gentrifying philly and make it nice. South philly is like brooklyn and center city is like manhattan. University city actually has good places to eat now.
Actually Nutter made Philadelphia much worse, at least it’s economy. When Street left city hall in 2008, Philadelphia had 8 Fortune 500 companies and this city was at the same strata as Chicago and San Francisco. When Nutter left, that number was greatly reduced down to 3, and now we’re currently down to two or one, I believe (Comcast is one of them). Among the companies that left in no order was Lincoln Financial, Sunoco, and Crown Holdings. Pepboys and Rohm and Haas was acquired by Icahn Enterprises and Dow, respectively, and Sovereign Bank was acquired by Santander and had its American HQ moved to Boston.
We’ve also lost a good deal of consulates from the Dominican Republic, Israel, Venezuela, Canada, and the United Kingdom to NYC. Ditto the direct flights to Paris and Rome by Air France and Alitalia. The teal reason why Philadelphia is finally experiencing some growth was due to the arduous work of former mayor of Philadelphia and former governor of Pennsylvania Edward G Rendell. Had Rendell not been elected, I’m pretty sure that Philadelphia would’ve been a lot worse than what it’s currently being.
Nutter was only an indirect beneficiary of the hard work that Mayor Rendell committed and I’d even argue that despite the media’s portrayal of Mayor Street, I still believe that Street was a way better mayor than Nutter and a lot of people don’t know this, but Street was selected to run the city by Rendell.
Opinion: Let's get back on track posters....We are in New York not another foreign country.
You better be making at least $100,000 grand if you want to live here and if you own a home
outright at least $75,000 yearly. Never thought about being rich to live in New York under Giuliani.
Crime was under control under his tenure as well. New York must return to the ways that worked
and desperately needs the likes of another Rudy Giuliani in order to up end the savagery that is
slowly creeping towards the doorsteps of every New Yorker. You get what you vote for..............................

Agreed and we better keep POTUS Trump or this country turns into a third world country within 5 years.
NYC has great “bones.” The infrastructure is there. The location is quite ideal. The foundation for a successful city is all there. Someone will always look to salvage it no matter how bad it gets. If Detroit, Philly, Newark, etc. can be revitalized, NYC will almost be a certain to be worth it.
Why would you to revitalize newark? What's the problem with it? Crime? No one is asking you to go there
