President Donald Trump unveiled in his plan of this evening's State of the Union Address
that any victim of a crime by an illegal immigrant living in a sanctuary city will have the right
to directly sue the city for compensatory damages. New York is a sanctuary city. If you are
a victim of a crime by an illegal immigrant you can hire a lawyer and sue the city for damages.
I think this brings a breath of fresh air to many a New Yorker knowing that the Federal Government
has our backs.
What is your opinion?
Curious minds would like to know...........
Should be a no brainer. The city is enabling their crimes as the persons in question are perps who’ve been arrested and would’ve been deported. We aren’t talking innocent “law abiding” illegals when we speak of sanctuary. We’re talking about perps not being held for Federal authorities.
This is just common sense, however, expect ACLU and gov't lawyers to initiate several lawsuits to stop this.
Another thing we need to sue the government for is the $10M+ that is allocated to provide counsel for illegals facing deportation. We have a homeless crisis in NYC and the middle class is struggling, yet we are providing millions to defend illegals. NYC needs to wise up and demand better of their politicians.
Maybe someone more knowledge than myself can explain why they couldn't already sue the cities ? I'm not familiar with bills that allow people to sue jurisdictions , I don't get what this bill actually does

There is a way to sue the city, although I don't know specific details. I already mentioned the mother of my acquaintance who was a schoolteacher in a NYC public high school in the late 1970s/early 80s, was attacked and severely injured in the school stairwell, then "sued the city" (whatever that specifically means legally), and received a huge amount of $ in damages. "Suing the city" probably involves the same legal mechanism by which people wrongly incarcerated (for crimes they did not commit) get their compensation.
Trump's proposed measure would be a truly helpful move. I doubt he came up with that himself, but whoever of his legally knowledgeable people is behind this proposal is a genius!
