I don't think any government can be prepared for an epidemic like this. The scope/scale is just too big. Are they going to have hospitals full of repiratory ICU beds sitting empty waiting for something to hit? Do you lock down society at the first hint of something like this, especially something that has a long incubation period and has lots of non/minimally symptomatic carriers, killing your economy every time?

My objection to shutting down everything is that it's going to be both ineffective in slowing down the spread/progression of the epidemic, while at the same time, it's going to kill the economy. As in wartime, you need to know when you have to take your lumps and keep moving forward. This is one of those times.

This country is not prepared for this epidemic.
I hope your sister pulls through and took every precaution not to get infected even though it’s obviously easier said than done. But sending positive thoughts to her and everyone in the healthcare system right now.

1918 saw a flu epidemic that killed five percent of the population. Now what would be worse for the economy shutting down for a period or losing 5 percent of the population ?

What about the kids that have working parents? You know all those people working non-stop at food markets, hospitals, etc. They have kids too and who is gonna watch them. I think it's quite self serving for people to call for schools to close down.

I said in previous posts that schools should not be closed they should be used to prevent further infections by having kids screened for COVID. There are some quick ways to do so by using body heat cameras to detect who maybe having the virus. What we've seen so far are that kids under 14 only get a fever and diarrhea. No lung issues.

How many people are going to be killed because of the economic shutdown? Because that WILL have it's own body count.

And, of course this assumes that shutting down the economy would actually be effective in reducing the epidemics mortality. This seems to be assumed, but I don't see that it's been proven. You could very well end up with the worst of both worlds.

All NYC public schools will close next week declared by Cuomo. De Blasio to hold a press conference.
They're tying to put in place programs to provide meals for the kids and child care for working parents.
