Default What is DeBlasio's justification for not closing schools?

I do not live in NYC, but my sister is a speech language pathologist at a preschool for extremely low functioning kids with various disorders. At the present time, she is required to report to work as usual, with no plans for closure in the near future. With so much of the country halting business as usual, including closing all schools, what is DeBlasio's justification for not doing the same, ESPECIALLY considering how many people there utilize mass transit to get around?

Not mentioned anywhere in the news. Contractually teachers don’t have to work past June 26. If he cancels schools teachers will still get paid. Gov floated ideas of summer school. It will be very hard to have summer school since teachers legally don’t have to show up for work. If you pay them maybe they show up. I can 110% guarantee non tenured teachers will work. Good luck getting a tenured teacher to show up in the summer when the contract says they don’t have to.

The rest of the world should have cut off flights from China as soon as this became a problem certainly. I do think that the travel restrictions helped slow the spread. Unfortunately, there are now enough infected in America for things to blow up from there. Which they will. So is important to show things down and restrict travel domestically until the infection rate diminishes.

This is short-sightedness from De Blasio and Carranza. This is a business decision at the cost of human lives. We're in a State of Emergency and business should not be the priority.

Oh I don't know....

BdeB is the same eegit who closed NYC public schools for dusting of snow or even before thanks to forecasts of bad storms that never happened. So for him to suddenly not want to shut NYC pubic schools means he's up to something.

Likely it is a mixture of what others have said; teachers union, pay, school year, etc... Sam The Eagle might be waiting for some word from his arch enemy in Albany (Fredo's Big Brother) about how NYC would be compensated for any mandated school closings.

NYC public schools have spring break from April 9 to 17, and there is work that has to be done before that event. Maybe a very small percent of kids from affluent households have computers and internet access of a sort they can work remotely. The rest will simply be at home for days or weeks at time doing nothing by and large. Well maybe the Asian parents and some others will force their kids to buckle down and keep with the routine; but again we're talking about small overall numbers.

There is no good answer to this; if public schools are closed thousands of kids are going to be left with nothing to do all day, and worse their parents will have to make arrangements for child care.

OTOH some teachers, students and schools are already turning up infected, so there is that side of things.

Previous posters are also correct in that certain number of school days are mandated by law. Since we had zero snow/bad storms this winter the built in "snow days" could be used, but they aren't huge in number.

Days missed thus will have to be made up some how, but when? Extending school year by a few days is one thing; but if public education system is shut down for a week or several there simply won't be a summer recess. Kids will have to attend school in July and part of August, good luck with that because as noted tenured union teachers don't have to show up past last week of June.

You can be sure all those teachers and their union moaning for Sam the Eagle to close schools now will moan even louder when told to report for one, two, three weeks in summer. Oh and they won't be doing this out of the kindness of their hearts either. They will insist on being paid if/when schools are shut down now, and won't be giving a GD thing back when told to show up during what should be their summer break.

Agree, if people can stay home they should. Nightclubs should not be open, catering halls, any social gathering spot CLOSED.

Only Supermarkets, Gas Stations and the like should be open. Life safety businesses are critical. UPS/FEDEX/USPS should somehow lower or eliminate shipping fees (maybe with Gov't help) so people can buy most things online at least for 2-3 weeks.

Our wise cut off travel rules may preclude the USA from reaching EU suffering levels.

Simply put, cut off travel = fewer infected visitors infecting fewer Americans.

To not cut off travel, as Italy and other EU nations did, was reckless endangerment.

What part of State of Emergency does the Mayor and Chancellor not understand? What are the priorities? Human lives > money. Get the funding for teachers later.

Parents are taking kids out of school and teachers are calling in sick anyway. There are petitions out there to close NYC public schools. A complete shut down is inevitable. Take the hit now to not prolong this ordeal. Learn from the countries that have gone through this already.
