That's why a democracy is so dangerous. People refuse to be told what to do, they will choose what they feel like to listen. That's why the US has such a high rate of fatalities due to car accidents, obesity, flu deaths, and drug overdoses.

There are democracies out there weathering this quite well and rather authoritarian regimes that are not. I don't think democracy in abstract is really the underlying issue.
All those people need to stay the **** inside or it's going to be mass casualties in states where they are not taking this seriously. By the time they can't deny there's a problem anymore it'll be a freight train that'll make Italy look like paradise
Who knows. We still don’t know how many people catch this and don’t show symptoms. I think the mass testing in New York is showing us this is the case. They’re supposedly testing people who are noticeably sick and we have 12,200 now. Other states have to be the same and this probably means many have it and don’t know.
Or the idea that it's just a flu or that the power of this or that religion can heal them if they congregate and pray hard enough. All pretty bad and the US is pretty primed for this kind of escapist thinking. I mean, look at the wonderful conspiratorial flights of fancy we've had on just this thread. There are some pretty radically unreasonable people out there and they are very convinced they know what's what.

The US has high obesity levels and fairly high levels of diabetes and heart disease. This is why I expect we will see a high number of deaths under 50 here relative to other nations

There's asthma, too.
Also, there's also fear of the personal costs of healthcare which might prevent people from trying to seek help earlier and when not yet extremely severe rather than later.
And I recognize macho tough guy talk when I see it.
This is already a war, except it’s a war against a virus. The virus is doing pretty good so far. We’ve got to do better for when the next epidemic from whatever other new diseases come out.
