Why would it be a mistake? It's just a choice. There are reasons to like Austin over NYC, and still great reasons to love NYC over Austin. Most importantly, your choice matters.
Austin is a city that has some of the flavors of the tech cities in California. But ultimately, it sounds boring when I listen to people from NYC who moved there. For some, it's perfect though. Again, your choice. Don't ever think a move is a mistake, it's just an evolution in your life story.
No Austin is nice, food is good, the Salt Lick is nearby. You can shoot guns and own guns. You can watch basketball in San Antonio which is not too far, and they have a hockey team too albeit AHL. They have college football. Only downside is you are not near the water. But that also means not as humid.
You have to drive everywhere, and cannot people watch. They do have this nightlife area where people love to congregate but you get a lot of college kids.
IMO leaving NYC for nearly anywhere would not be a mistake. And Austin is really not a bad choice. I've had a lot of friends and family move over there over the last few years. Most of them moved for new jobs, so I guess it's a good place to find work. They're really enjoying having more space, and say the city is nice. None of them are planning to be back anytime soon. They do get worse weather, hotter summers and some hurricane-related rain now and then.

I went there recently and you're wrong about needing a car. East Austin (not the part where all the tourists/college kids congregate) is walkable and feels like a hipster neighborhood in Brooklyn in terms of amenities.
NYC is the greatest city in the US. Not necessarily the same as “best”.
NYC is neither. It's the biggest, but that's it. Plenty of cities in America that are worse like Baltimore, St Louis, Detroit etc. but plenty that are better such as Austin, San Diego etc.
