Weather alone would make me skip anywhere south of philly. New Hampshire mountains look attractive for my tastes.

Yeah my biggest grip with Texas and Florida is the weather. I'm not the biggest fan of Winter but I love weather variety.

I would take both over NY in a heartbeat though.

Austin is pretty liberal. A lot of NYC residents just view Texas through political lens. It is called Weird Austin for a reason and is full of hipsters.

Too bad. I really liked the hill country outside of Austin.

Oh, and the BBQ

And homeless. Lots of them. The density seems higher than here, at least in certain areas.

East Texas has plenty of deep woods.

And while I like the fact that Austin is in TX, with it's state level conservatism, that will drive a lot of NYers bonkers. Also, it's much more autocentric than NYC. Having a car is close to mandatory there, and a lot of the housing is much more suburban style.
I think liberals secretly are okay with Texas being conservative or they wouldn't be moving to Austin and DFW in droves. Austin itself is just as liberal as NYC anyway and Dallas is too.

And you could definitely people watch.
I have been there too. You need a car. Go to Austin Subforum and ask them. Its not like Manhattan in which people never leave the boro and never need a car. If you live in Texas basically, you will want to check out other places and need a car for that.

It's not hype, I love it and so does everyone I talk to who has gone there.

My ultra liberal mom thought she would hate it, but she went there and realized that it wasn't like her preconceived notions.
