East 14th Street in the East Village has become a haven for homelessness and drug use as unlicensed vendors fill the sidewalk peddling trash and broken items, according to local merchants and residents.
Before the pandemic, Immaculate Conception Church, located at the corner of First Avenue and East 14th Street, continuously held their weekend flea market in their parking lot.
But when the COVID-19 pandemic hit in early 2020 the church was forced to shut down the community event. In the wake of this closure, a homeless community moved onto the block — spreading out blankets and cardboard boxes on which they peddled everything from pirate DVDs to used food items, sometimes even going so far as to sell open seasoning containers and tangled extension cords.
They do something similar on 6th ave between 23 and 24th street.
That block always had table set up and blankets where people sold things but now its just looking like a trash yard.

Are you really surprised? With the lax enforcement and the change in our laws, the criminals can do whatever they want with no repercussions. Pathetic.
Yes, it's the poor working people who are victimized by the trash throwing people. Look at the picture.

"Jimmy Jiang, owner Hawa Smoothies and Bubble Tea juice bar, also feels helpless about the whole situation. He has now been forced to close his shop on weekends since customers say it’s just too dangerous for shoppers."
Who are the criminals? The people leaving the trash and creating an unsafe and unsanitary street, or the storeowner who is losing business due to the trash left by them?

Nothing new. This has been happening all over the South Bronx for the last few months. People are just taking over a part of the sidewalk and spread out their goods for sale. Alot of the clothes these people are selling are from the clothes donation dumpsters at gas stations. They fish the clothes out and sell them. Sometimes I even see them selling mattresses which is a big ewwww. I like how this news outlet picks it up when it hits Manhattan but outer boroughs had this issue long before.
Maybe now Manhattan have an issue with it they will clean it up for them and the outer boroughs too.
