NYC could use the revenue...

Cash-strapped New York state is “ripe” for the picking when it comes to legalizing marijuana for public sale and distribution, Governor Andrew Cuomo said Thursday morning.

During an interview with WAMC radio’s Alan Chartock, Cuomo was asked about New Jersey’s successful Election Day referendum permitting the sale and recreational use of cannabis — the third state adjacent to New York to do so...

How pathetic that New Jersey gets Rec weed before NYC does. I really hope my fellow NY'ers get a taste of freedom allowed in other states.

Having rec weed in NYC would actually make living there bearable.

Don't underestimate politicians to F it up though. The pickings are RIPE for that as well.

Actually NJ has dragged it's feet all the way. Medical marijuana was passed 10 years ago but there are only 11 dispensaries (soon to be 12) for the entire state. How many bars, liquor stores and restaurants serving liquor are in NJ? Thousands. How many pharmacies dispensing prescription drugs? Hundreds.

Gov. Murphy was elected on the issue of legalizing marijuana but has failed to do anything about it. Now that the referendum has passed he says recreational marijuana is still illegal and still subject to arrest (presently about 100 arrests a day for possession) until the legislature passes a regulatory framework for the adult use of marijuana. He has been blaming the legislature for failing to move toward legalization for the last three years, while doing nothing on the issue.

Why does this sound to me like more of the same stonewalling? I don't expect recreational NJ weed shops any time soon. Supposedly NJ voters approved use and growing of marijuana, but today a single plant will get you a felony conviction and a 3 year prison sentence. Will the new regulations permit home growing like the referendum stated? I'm skeptical. I'm not feeling any taste of freedom on the issue until I can grow my own.

Paying $400+ an ounce (about 2 joints a day for a month) is not my idea of freedom either. For years I drank 4oz. of Jack Daniels a night for about $80 a month in current prices. I couldn't afford to be caught on a random drug test at work and get fired.

Cuomo is only doing this since it looks like NJ is going to make it legal. We don't want people living in Manhattan taking a bus/ferry/path train to NJ and buying their 420 then coming back to NYC to smoke it.

I'm not a fan of legalizing marijuana in smoke form b/c of secondhand smoke. But if people want to consume edibles then I don't have a problem with it.
