When I lived in NYC, many people (if there to leave) really only seemed to consider two places. Either MIAMI or SAN FRANCISCO. One for the weather and one for what was perceived to be most similar to NYC but on the other coast.
How about NEW ORLEANS? I never once heard anyone in NYC consider New Orleans. Post-Katrina isnt the best time. But its very condensed and walkable and I think literary and oozing with culture.

its also oozing with contamination from all that crap that seeped into the ground during the hurricane.
i HATED new orleans. It was small, trashy, and definitely not a place i would ever CONSIDER moving. I went there on 2 hurricane relief trips and i NEVER want to go back, yuck!!!!

in addition to what you noted it can be hot as hell may-oct
I've considered it for vacations. I think I would like the architecture, the dining options, and music from NO, but as for living, I would rather not. There's still some very serious infrastructure issues there, and there is a huge crime problem (pre and post Katrina) to boot. But to visit, I would love to.
