Blast from the past. I remember this station. I was more into WLIR (later changed to WDRE) so didn't listen to this station all that much but I recall Scott Shannon.
It was August 2, 1983. A new radio station, WHTZ, has hit the airwaves.
The disc jockey leading the charge? An out-of-towner by the name of Scott Shannon.
Despite naysayers, it rose to the top and its success is the subject of a new documentary, "From Worst to First: The True Story of Z100 New York". A combination of top 40 music, crazy phone calls, phone parodies, and DJ shenanigans helped Z100 thrive and it continues to leave a lasting legacy.
"You had WABC, WNBC, WPLJ, and here comes this punk from Florida and they didn't think it was gonna work," said Shannon.
"There's a New York-ness to Z100, and this film, that's authentic," said filmmaker Mitchell Stuart.
Shannon also recruited the audience to help them beat the other stations, and a little creative branding didn't hurt either. It became famous for its catch phrase, "serving the universe from the top of the Empire State Building.”
That famous phrase was not a lie, technically. Z100's transmitter is at the top of Empire State Building, but its competitors also used that transmitter. At the time, Z100's office was actually in Secaucus.
Stars including Jon Bon Jovi, Joan Jett, Debbie Gibson, Gavin DeGraw, and Nile Rodgers are all featured in the documentary.
I remember listening to Love Phones with Dr. Judy and Chris Jagger. Occasionally a prank caller got through. It was hilarious on some nights when they did.
They played ok music back in the day,
I am mostly on XM, but last time I checked, stupefaction of the youth with horrible music is in full swing.
Just an FYI...
I tried to cancel sirius recently as I do not need it in my Tesla. Customer service tried everything to get me to change my mind, then finally flat refused to cancel my account because I could not confirm the INCORRECT address they had on file. I lived in that same house through nearly the entire existence of the company, much more so my account!
I argued this stupidity for 10 minutes before hanging up to call my bank. I literally had to get a new debit card (thankfully, that's all they had to charge me) to get their automatic payments stopped.
Sirius may as well be a Nigerian prince as far as I am concerned. Huge scammers.

Weird. I never had a problem. Been with them for over 10 years. Have them on two cars.
The issue I have with them is the low quality audio streaming. Limitations of their system. Im an audio fan and try to get the highest quality I can find. For home I use Tidal, which claims to be lossless. In the car XM sounds too compressed. At least there are no commercials. I dont tolerate commercials. Canceled cable at home 10 years ago with zero regret.
Forgot, 88.3, 91.5, 88.1, 89.1 on FM sometimes has good stuff, jazz, offbeat indie music. Anything above on FM range is just pure garbage.
Which Tesla you got? I'm a die hard V8 guy, but drove a 3 recently and was blown away. Id get one if I had to commute every day, but I dont and Im not a fan of the minimalistic design inside. Still a fantastic brand though.

Back then I was working part time at Wheelers and Scott Shannon would call the place and mention us on the radio.
