NYC has 544k small businesses. The next city with the most small businesses in LA with 353k. Apparently lots of people are still opening up businesses here. The problems are equally shared between politicians and greedy landlords. In Manhattan, why is the commercial cost per sf so high? Because the RE titans that own the buildings (ahem, Vornado) charge astronomical sums of money to rent them out. The empty storefronts were happening long before COVID and the protests.

Do Uber/Lyft drivers and food delivery personnel count as "small businesses" in this 544K number? This is a serious question.

And how many were there ten years ago? What's the current trajectory? And there is still the issue of all the empty storefronts. Whatever the cause, they don't bode well.
