Easy thing to do is to avoid areas where crazy people or criminals might be. Streets, subways, buses.
Drive where you have to, dine in restaurants, visit museums. All you have to do is avoid public lands in NYC.

Also mind your business. You see an altercation, keep on walking unless you know how to fight or have a weapon. Live another day.

Kinda hard when there’s literal criminals everywhere now. You can be in the safest neighborhood & still get attacked.
