I remember having this problem, and I'm glad to see some pushback. For some reason, the article treats it as an issue for older people, which it isn't.

I was required to pay for a very expensive car service after some office surgery, and not only did I not need it, because I was capable of just walking out and grabbing a taxi - the doctor's office didn't even check to see if there really was a car at all!

You May Need That Procedure. But Do You Really Need an Escort?
Following even basic screenings and operations, patients often must arrange for someone to deliver them home.

Robert Lewinger is tired of being berated by his gastroenterologist because he’s overdue for a colonoscopy. He’s perfectly willing to have one. And he’s more than ready for cataract surgery on his second eye. The problem: Mr. Lewinger, 72, a retired lawyer who lives in Manhattan, can’t schedule either of these procedures, which involve anesthesia or sedation, unless he supplies the name and phone number of the person taking him home afterward. Otherwise, clinics and outpatient surgical centers refuse to make appointments.

Out patient procedures are a wonderful thing in terms of cost savings, convenience, and so forth, but they aren't always risk free.

People are still receiving pain meds, anesthetics and other drugs that may take several hours to wear off. There is also (depending upon type of procedure) risks of things such as nausea, vomiting, bleeding, and so on.

Thus for a host of reasons (usually down to liability) physicians performing certain out patient procedures require someone who will escort patient home and sometimes even remain for several hours to overnight afterwards.

Alternative is having things done in hospital (inpatient) which not only is more expensive but depending upon procedure insurance may not cover all or as much. Coloscopies nowadays are rarely performed in hospital unless there is a good reason why it cannot be done as outpatient.

You are absolutely right.
I had to jump thru hoops for my
routine colonoscopy and endoscopy .
Had to have someone to take me home or it wasn't getting done.

Anyone who lives alone knows this is a problematic situation. One needs to ask even an acquaintance or neighbor if necessary. The other solution some medical facilities might let one wait there for a few hours before going home alone if the procedure is done early enough during the day.

I left after a colonoscopy by saying "Who in this office is going to restrain me by felony assault?"

It's such a pain to find someone pick you up. I've been under Anesthesia 4 times in the last year. Every time I had a friend come upstairs walked out with me and then they went their way and I got a cab.

That would be amazing. Maybe start one.

As far as Lasik, I didn't need someone when I got it but then again it was over 20 years ago. I got it done and then picked up the kids I babysat for with my cool dark glasses on

That's all very well; but remember if anything goes down it's all on you.

Am also here to tell you it is highly unadvisable to puke in a taxi or Uber/Lyft ride. Drivers get totally pi$$ed off and loose their minds nowadays when it happens. Have seen drivers almost literally drag some poor soul out of their cab/car all the while cursing and screaming about how they've puked all over back seat and floor.

Most people don't vomit from having had anesthesia! But I do agree that if any severe side effects do happen it's better to have someone with you when going home after having anesthesia.
