I'm gay and let me tell you, I don't find it a huge issue. Yes, I'd love to have a family but not in todays society. Maybe when we see big changes but not right now. Lets face it, the majority of gay men aren't thinking of having a family right now so they can afford to go to an area with horrible schools.
Oh.. right, I wasn't even thinking about it in that context! I was just thinking about schools for themselves to attend.
I think it is Barbara Corcoran who says to follow Starbucks (or other trendy coffee shops) when looking for the next "really big thing" in terms of real estate. I have always said - follow the gay and lesbian community! Case in point, the great brownstone that Hypnotyzzed was overbid on was purchased by a lesbian couple.
PS Speaking of Barbara Corcoran, she was saying a year a go that the South Bronx was a great buy!
I think Starbucks is usually behind the trend (note all the closed stores). Barbara also has a bunch of empty stores in Red Hook. She's great at marketing herself - I'm not convinced about her real estate advice for regular folks. She just bought a place on the Upper East Side. Sounds like she's going back to old school.
Dallas BBQ would go over well..and I think the HUB area or Melrose would be an ideal place for it. Regarding Starbucks...there was one that opened on Fordham Road a few years ago but then closed shortly thereafter...not sure if they were too ahead of the curve or that people in the area would not pay that much for coffee.
I would not put too much stock into anything a Corcoran would say..she is a realtor and their job is to sell! Nonetheless, from the sales activity and continued pace of development, the South Bronx is still a BUY for the forseeable future in my opinion (and I am not selling anything!)

I believe it was because of the latter statement. Many people (especially the Hispanics) prefer the coffee made in bodegas since "they make it the way they want it." Personally, I prefer the bodegas' coffee since its cheap and made just right.
