Need advice on moving into NYC (how much, moving to, budget)

Thinking of putting my Long Island commuting days behind me. Wife and I are consideirng the move. I will be working on the upper east side so am considering moving to the same area in general. I am a city boy at heart born and raised but am out of touch for so many years. Any advice on where to go, how much, what to look for..no kids just us. We are fairly quiet not partiers in our 50's. One bedroom is fine. Should I look at a smaller walk-up or a high rise??
