Ok, here's my situation. I am currently recieving unemployment benefits from CA, where I was laid off recently.I'm planning on moving to NYC in a month for a change, and am wondering can i still recieve my UI benefits while living in NYC? Does anyone know if this is doable.I dont want to lose the benefits while looking for a job? I plan on finding a job out there in the Wireless Phone industry, where i have my experience and start my life fresh in a new state. Any input would be helpful.Thanks.

I suggest you check with the California Dept. of Labor.

My guess would be no. Why would California want to subsidize a non resident? Especially with how that state's budget is going.

Looking at California's Claim Filing Information webpage, it says:

Out-of-State Residents

You must actively seek work and should register for Job Search assistance with the local employment office in your state. Look in the telephone directory for local telephone listings

My guess (and it's only a guess) is that UI benefits would follow you if you move out of state. When you file for UI, any out-of-state wages you earned in the previous 12 months are counted, so benefits don't seem to be tied to one specific state. (Does that sentence make sense? )

For the most reliable answer to your question, of course, you should contact EDD directly.

Generally, you are allowed collect benefits when living out of states. Most states realize that sometimes you are better off going to another state to get a job and they are usually more concerned with getting you off the dole than keeping you in their state. I know if you collect unemployment in NY you can live out of state.

This is also allowed to account for if you lose a job in one state but lived in another. For example, my wife worked in CT while living in NY and lost her job. It was determined that she was to collect UI from CT even though she never lived there and she did that.
