i hope to move to nyc in january and was told these areas were my best bets for affordable rent ($1500 or less) and near w 26th st and 6th ave. got any other ideas? if not, what would be the best place to live for a single woman w/ 2 dogs (1 medium and 1 small)?

26th & 6th is chelsea. it's a great area. a little congested for dogs imo, but you may be able to swing it. there's a dog park @ washington square park (there may be another one closer to 26th though. not sure.

you may prefer murray hill or grammercy with the dogs, its a little more quiet by grammercy park. another great area.

you can't go wrong with any of those neighborhoods. but i'm not sure if $1500 is going to get you anything w/o a roommate. e. village may be more affordable? i'm sure others can advise on that.

Chelsea is not really an affordable area IMO. I pay $2200 for a studio...

i see a bunch of apts/studios on craigslist for under $1500 in murray hill. should i be weary? i plan on coming in dec to actually look and put a deposit on a place but i've read more than once on this site that there's a lot of craigslist scams. i've never encountered that before.

I personally have never been scammed by craigslist and I actually found a really great place on there. However you really need to SEE the place before you take it.

There have been innumerable posts on here about where to find management company websites with no fee rentals. Craigs List is a crap shoot, not only for true scams but for brokers advertising non-existent apartments to get hired.

In addition to the management companies, nybits.com has a good selection of no fee rentals.

$1500 is doable, but is going to be a studio. In terms of your commute to w 26th Street, you might also try Hells Kitchen and UWS (probably too pricey), and the area between 23rd and 34th street on the east side that people interchangeably (and usually incorrectly) refer to as Murray Hill, Kips Bay, or Gramercy. The commute from the east village is not going to be very easy, unless you are near Bleeker Street and 2nd Avenue or Astor Place and can hop on the F train.

i live in the murray hill/gramercy park area and pay around $1525 for a 1 bedroom apt.

i did have to pay a broker fee tho, as it was not listed on CL...if you can do it, try to find a place that you dont have to pay broker fees for, as thats pretty expensive (10 - 15% of the total rent for the year)

Get a submay map. You can find a good one here. New York City Subway Map

There are plenty of places in Brooklyn or Queens within reasonable commuting distance to 26th and 6th. Everyone in the world that I have ever met grossly understates the time it takes for them to commute or otherwise get anywhere by car or public transportation. Plenty of places are "under 30 minutes" in terms of actual time on the train from 26th and 6th. But I have lots of colleagues that tell me their comute from Westchester is 30 minutes because the train ride is 35 minutes to Grand Central. But the car ride to the train station, parking, waiting for the train, and walking/transit in Manhattan all more than double the actual commute time.

It is unlikely there is any place in Brooklyn or Queens that will be 30 minutes door to door to your office. However, lots of places will involve a train ride of 30 minutes or less, including Long Island City, Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill, Park Slope, etc. Also, their is a Path stop at 23rd Street and 6th Avenue, so Hoboken and Jersey city might also be of interest.
