Hey all! I am flying from SLC to NYC and need to figure out the best route. We will stay in Chelsea or Manhatten and need to figure out if the $477 plane ticket straight into JFK is worth it or should we get a ticket to Newark for $300 and then take the shuttle or bus into Manhatten?
1. Will it be expensive and stressful to get into Chels. or Man. from Newark? what method and cost estimate?
2. Will we need to take trasit from JFK to Chels. or Man? and what method (cab or bus) and cost estimate?
Thanks!
chelsea is in manhattan. personally, i think its pretty easy getting into manhattan from newark airport. depending on traffic, it usually takes a few minutes to get to the tunnels. and then head downtown. i'm not sure about shuttles, i usually hop in a cab or drive. you can also take the nj transit train into the city and catch a cab from there.

I would take the savings and fly into Newark. As a previous poster said Chelsea is in Manhattan. There is a bus from Newark Airport to the Port Authority, Bryant Park and Grand Central where you can easily get to your hotel. It may be a little stressful depending on the amount of luggage and how far away from public transport your accommodation is. The bus is about $30 round trip per person. Taxi is about $80. Timing is about 30 mins to 2 hours depending on traffic.
Just for the sake of comparison JFK taxi is about $55 (incl tip), and the bus from JFK is about $25 round trip. Timing is about the same depending on traffic (although less likely to hit the 2 hour mark unless its in a bad peak hour). The JFK bus also has a free shuttle to midtown hotels.
Unless there is some benefit to flying into JFK I think it is well worth saving the $177.
You can also take New Jersey Transit (commuter rail) into Penn Station, which is very close to Chelsea. Penn has direct a connection to the subway, etc.
Note: It's very easy to get a can from Newark, it's very difficult (if not impossible) to get a cab to Newark. New York cabs can't pick up a return fare so they'll charge you double, if they'll go at all.
Because Chelsea is on the West Side, you're fine going into Newark and taking bus to Port Authority for $15 one-way or train to Penn Station for $15 one-way. Both are on the west side.
If you don't mind a couple stops (to drop off at hotels or wherever your fellow passengers are going), then the shared van services such as super shuttle or airlink are a really good way to avoid schlepping luggage on buses/trains while being a lot less $$ for a single traveler vs taking a cab.
Go to Newark Airport , then use NJT to Newark Penn , then Switch to PATH Trains and that will bring you to Lower & Midtown Manhattan. Which is traffic free , as opposed to any bus or cab into Manhattan.

This is what I would say to do, as well. Personally, I would always choose trains over cabs, as they're much cheaper, and don't have to face the troubles of traffic. The only problem is that if you're carrying A LOT of luggage, it might just be simpler to take a cab, but that depends on you.
Agreed. I would take the train (NJ Transit to New York Penn; transferring to the PATH makes sense if you're going to Lower Manhattan) over the bus if traveling lightly. With any heavy/multiple luggage, I'd take Super Shuttle / Airlink over a cab.

Having taken all forms the bus takes about the same time as the train/airtrain door to door. Depending on where you are in Midtown and minimizing transfers there is not much of difference. If you have a hike from either the Port Authority/Bryan Park/Grand Central or Penn Station I would arrange for a Super Shuttle because getting through public transport with any amount of luggage is not easy.
