We are moving to NYC from Tennessee, trying to determine the best public schools to visit (along with family-friendly neighborhoods) for relocation. Because of our timing, we'll need to find an apartment in the catchment for the school our son attends. He'll be in first grade. Recommendations have been PS87 and PS9 on UWS. Our living situation/location will be based on schools, so we are open to suggestions. Very interested in Brooklyn, but need guidance on schools there. Scores, teacher/child ratios, active PTA and balanced demographic makeup are all important to us. Thanks for any and all suggestions.

what borough you want to live in?
queens is more for families. I'm guessing TN has worse schools than NY at least in Memphis so it shouldnt be that bad for you especially in 1st grade.

we live on the UES which is the district 2 schools. My little one goes to PS 158 which is a very good school. the area is very family friendly but then again we in bed by 8:30 on a school night so not sure what is family friendly after that. Just a crosstown bus away from the west side.

as far as the zoning areas for the schools, I know in the city at least as much as they really try to keep your child in your zone school, there is a chance that won't happen. Lots of overcrowding going on in nyc schools. I know quite a few folks who live right across ps 234 in tribeca and their child wasn't able to get in their zone school
