My husband was just offered transfer to Lake Mohegan, NY (he had a transfer to NH fall apart ) Anyway, we are driving up tomorrow to get a feel for the area and drive around Washingtonville, Montgomery and some other place I forget the name of . We have three kids so a great school system is very important. We also prefer a fairly rural area and would love to live somewhere where people are friendly and welcoming. A small town feel would be great.
We would also consider CT but are completely unfamiliar with the whole area. (NY & CT)

Right now we live in central NJ where my biggest complaints are that people (in general) are miserable, the moms "cliques" are surprisingly strong, I miss the mountains and would love some real snowfall.

ETA: My husband also just suggested Pawling.

Thoughts & opinions??

Hello. I live in Montgomery, NY - one of the places you have mentioned as a potential destination. Its a really nice village - lots of antique shops, pizza, and a park on the Wallkill River. For grocery shopping, Montgomery has its own Shoprite. Attached is a Rite Aid as well as other shops. A Walgreens is in the process of being built. Montgomery has a country feel to it but is only 1.5 hours away from the city. On the flip side of that, Montgomery lies in the foothills of the Catskill mountains - a day trip to the mountains is great. We average about 45 inches of snow a year. Schools are great - Valley Central SD.

Washingtonville is nice too. Great schools. Goshen, Chester, Florida, and Warwick are some other options in Orange County.

But since your husband will be working East of Hudson, why not stay on that side of the river?

Putnam and Dutchess counties are very nice...look into Cold Spring or Beacon.

cold spring is really nice, but pricey.. then again its all pricey up here. mohegan lake is a decent working class area. standard bopx stores along rt 6, a small mall right near the taconic, and rt 6. 10 to fifteen minutes north of there, is alot of woods and hills. fahnstock park is over 13,000 acres. lots of trails snow shoeing, cross country skiing available, as well as deer hunting if your into that sort of thing. Then.. you have the DEP properties all over westchester and putnam counties, beautiful landscapes, and reservoirs for your enjoyment. the further north you go from mohegan lake the more rural it gets. eastern putnam county is very rural, like the Patterson area, and lower dutchess county has some nice home prices. good luck!
