Are you living in the 80s? Binghamton's crime rate is SIGNIFICANTLY higher than most cities in the country. How many? Currently, there are just SEVEN PERCENT of cities in the entire country that have a lower crime rate than Binghamton.

Being in the bottom 7% is hardly a "very safe metro"

You revived a dead 2 year old thread for this?

Beyond that, Binghamton's crime is very "focused". The crime (particularly the violent crime), stays in the places you have no reason to be, simply put, and stays among people you have no reason to be associated with. It's extremely rare that I've ever heard of much random violent crime.

The city puts out crime maps here, it's rather clear: Don't live on Main St or certain other districts, and you'll have no violent crime around.

It's also worth noting that the heavy college student population likely skews crime rates significantly. There's 6000 off campus students living in the metro (as well as another 8000 students living on campus, heading downtown and drinking, and other such behavior), yet very few of them have probably actually changed their official residence to Binghamton, driving down the population count (and as a result, making per capita crime rates a good 10% worse than they likely are with the real population).

College students are also often rather.....stupid, with regards to their property. The frequency with which they tend to leave things unlocked, out in the open, and that sort of thing, is way worse than what most people would do.

Wow..that is pretty ignorant. Clearly you haven't been to Binghamton in years. Focused? Yeah...just focused to the West Side, South Side, East Side, North Side and Downtown. And Johnson City. And Endicott.

Basically, anywhere the area is flat. That kind of focused! And really...people have NO RIGHT to be in any of those places! Like the cop that was killed near Wilson Hospital! People have no right to g to the hospital! Or the shootings near Binghamton General, just a block from the hospital and Weis. People have no right going grocery shopping!

Seriously...if you haven't been to the city in a long time, then feel free to stay out of the conversation so you don't embarrass yourself with your ignorance again.

Did you know?

  • The chance of being a victim of a crime in Binghamton is 1 in 19.
  • The chance of being a victim of a violent crime in Binghamton is 1 in 178.
  • The chance of being a victim of a property crime in Binghamton is 1 in 21.

Again, that is for the city only, not the metro. Much of it seems to be due to the property crime in the city.

He said Binghamton. Not the metro of Binghamton. You're changing it to the metro.

The ckh formula:

poster says bad crime = use metro statistics to refute
poster says bad schools = use metro statistics to refute
poster says high housing cost = use city statistics to refute

I said metro. So, that is what I went by.

Also, you can't be that much of a hater, can you? If I say a certain thing, I stick by that. All you have to do is read my post where I mentioned that the metro is relatively safe, but there are rough areas in Binghamton and basically 1 little area in both Johnson City and Endicott. Keep in mind that the original title says Binghamton area.

I'm not calling people names, but you come off as a hater and angry individual, for some reason. I could care less about what people post on here, to be honest and given what some people have posted on here, there are much worse posts than what I've ever posted on here.
It's not about being angry but I think it's unfortunate that people like you misinform people for some agenda to get them to move to NY. Yes, people post worse than you but it's a real disservice to people looking for relocation info to tell them things like Binghamton is safe. I've also seen you post about Syracuse being safe but I figured out that your stats were including towns like Manlius so of course. I feel kinda bad for people who have their heart set on moving someplace nice and safe and end up with a rude awakening.

No I don't have an agenda to get people to move to NY. For what? It isn't like I get paid for posting on here. That is your assumption and just look at what I said. I stated that the METRO is relatively safe and posted information to correspond that statement. Same for the Syracuse AREA and even then, I mentioned areas within those metros that are rougher than other parts of those metros. Stop assuming and take things for what they are.
